The New No-Diet-No-Exercise Weight-Loss Plan

Last night's ten o'clock news beckoned with a diet trick sure to inspire--a weight-loss method that requires no exercise or food restriction.

Following several stories and commercial breaks, the plan was unveiled: chew gum. As the reporter informed us, chewing gum during the afternoon results in 36 fewer calories consumed per day.

36. So, in about 100 days, if you're to chew gum every day, you may (if you're the norm) lose about a pound. How, I wonder, did this make the news?

wow. that's odd to hear, considering I chew gum to keep from eating food. Like all diet plans, diet products, and other crap that are unveiled through the media, I am sure this is very untrue. Unfortunately, no matter how much we tell ourselves that, we believe it and try them all out anyway.

Yes, it is assuming that chewing gum keeps you from eating, which, like brushing my teeth, has never worked for me. If I'm chewing a piece of gum (which I can only do for about 2 minutes anyway because once it loses its flavor I no longer want it) and I get hungry, I throw the damned gum out and eat. If I have brushed my teeth and get hungry, I eat and then brush them again later.
More bogus "information". The sad thing is, people buy this stuff. Hmm, I wonder if it was started by a chewing gum company...

These types of studies are comically frusterating. Chewing gum promotes weight loss. LOTS of things promote weight loss - doesn't mean its HEALTHY. Its like those Kellogs weight loss plans. "Eat a bowl for breakfast, for lunch, and then a sensible dinner". Certainly you'll lose weight eating so little. Like this is rocket science. Doesn't mean its a healthy idea. A huge problem in our culture is equating weight loss with HEALTH. The two are not the same. Skinny and healthy are not synonyms.

"How, I wonder, did this make the news?"

The networks were *ahem* restrained from talking about anything of import - like, oh, the destruction of White House emails on the topic of Justice Department directives, or the federal deficit.

You know, bring-down bummers like that.

I wish I could chew gum -but since I've had problems with TMJ, I try not to chew it.

How did this make the news? Really, it's not like we're at WAR or anything...

Funny, I chew gum to freshen my breath. Silly me!

Sorry for the sarcasm, but this stuff just makes me want to scream.
