'Round Here

The EWHAED newsroom (and by newsroom, I mean me, at my computer) has been pretty active lately. Take a look:

From Rachel, over at the f-word:

I'm conducting an anonymous survey of bloggers who blog about eating disorders or eating disorder recovery in partnership with a clinical psychologist for joint research and publication purposes. I know your site attracts readers who have struggled with eating disorders, some of whom also maintain blogs. I'm hoping our survey generates lots of responses so that our findings are well-rounded, inclusive and convincing. Would you mind mentioning this survey on your blog to your readers?

More information and a survey link can be found here.
Also, Leslie, at The Weighting Game informs me she'll be on The Today Show this Wednesday during the 10am hour to discuss the question: "Would you rather be permanently 40 pounds overweight and smart, or skinny and dumb?" This is Leslie's second (recent) visit to Today--recently, she spoke about Spring Break and ED's.

Please support these valued members of the EWHAED community!

How about: I'd rather Not be overweight And Also retain my intelligence. But if I were Forced to chose, I'd keep all my smarts. Because beauty fades, but stupid is forever. (This is a real good example of why I do not watch any TV. A lot of it is just DUMB, playing off all kinds of stereotypes and fallacies of all women, thin and fat).

My god, would they ever ask a man these sorts of questions? Does anyone else find it remarkable that the show is going to the expense of flying her in and putting her up in a hotel room and hiring a driver to chauffeur her from hotel to studio just to ask her this kind of fluffy, inconsequential question?

I do hope she will be permitted to add something more substantial to the segment.

And thanks for the survey mention :) I appreciate it.

Thanks for posting this, Dr. S! I took Rachel's quiz and think it's so important for other bloggers to do the same.

Hopefully the sping break/eating disorder show will bring attention to the issue - I don't think many parents even know the pressure that exists.

As for the upcoming segment, I think what makes the question interesting is that it is EVEN A QUESTION. Unfort., in today's society, looks often trump everything (sadly so.) I hope to dispel, or at least temporarily quiet, that notion.

Yes, well, it's probably the exact kind of question young girls deliberate on with disturbing intensity: ("OMG! I'd sooo totally Never want to be fat! I'd Much rather be dumb, even though it's bad to be dumb"). Who can really blame them? We are an eating-disordered culture, and TV certainly reflects (and promotes) this disturbing reality.

fauve--that's what she's planning to say. . .

rachel--probably not. The question itself might be fluffy, but the topic (and the thoughts and feelings it inspires) certainly is not.

leslie--can't wait to see you tomorrow!

fauve--"old" girls, too. We are, and it is. ..

I found some interesting facts on Bulimia here. Check it out!

But it's a question that can have no positive answer. No one truly wants to be fat. At least, not fat by "morbid obesity" standards (I'm not talking size 16)! No one wants to have joint pain from too much weight, sleep apnea, diabetes and so forth. And no one wants to be stupid (I hope). She should tell the Today Show that their question is a set-up for a very shallow approach to these topics. I doubt she will do much good, despite her laudable intentions. The very best she can do is lay it on the line to them and say, on air: this is a very stupid question!
