Gambling on Life

The Hollywood Gossip is a celebrity site that devotes an entire category of posts to eating-disorder gossip. On the site, recently, I found this poll:

Which emaciated star will disappear first?
1) Nicole Richie
2) Kate Bosworth
3) Mischa Barton
4) Paris Hilton
5) Ashlee Simpson
Games: Simon Says, Monopoly, Spades
Not Games: Taking bids on people’s lives

Wow. Sometimes sarcasism is funny, but I don't see the funny in this poll. It just sounds cruel and sad. I cringe every time I see a picture of Nicole Ritchie in a bathing suit. Her suits are so loose, it's as if she wants to exaggerate how much weight she's lost. Like she's proud of it.

"eating-disorder gossip"

I'm really struggling with the fact that our culture is obsessed with this as it simultaneously -- and drastically -- trivializes it.

Seriously, a new societal low.

It's disturbing on a lot of levels.

Seriously, what have we become. As a society I mean.

Next there will be a poll asking which overweight celebrity will explode first.

I'm going to pretend they mean "disappear from public consciousness as emaciated starlet because she will attain a healthy weight and start working in an office and be happy" for the sake of my peace of mind.

stacy--it is difficult to see those shots.

lm--interesting paradox. . .

jen--you mean, they haven't had that one already? ; )

blubbah--thanks for the healthy re-frame. : )

This is so sad. I'm old enough to remember Karen Carpenter dying from anorexia. Do these young women realize what they are endangering their lives? Its so sad.

I love your blog, so glad I found it!

In my opinion, Gambling is something that every human being has the right to do, and politicians should keep their noses out of what people do for entertainment or within the comfort of their own homes.
